Woman dies in luge crash in Brisbane

SUE WICKENDEN was not your stereotypical extreme sportswoman. A 50-year-old mother who owned and ran a successful IT company, Ms Wickenden was heavily involved in her local historical society and renowned in her community as a ''beautiful and kind'' person.
Ms Wickenden was killed when she failed to negotiate a turn and struck a steel barrier while riding with a group of lugers at Mount Coot-tha, Brisbane, early yesterday morning. Her partner, also a luge rider, and a close friend, Tyler Johnson, administrator of the Brisbane Street Luge club, were with her when she died.

Senior Sergeant Ian Park said it appeared the woman had been travelling at a considerable speed.

"That's subject to investigation at this stage, but it would appear that most likely going too fast has contributed significantly to what's happened today, as indicated the injuries were fatal unfortunately," he told the ABC.

"It's certainly a reminder for everybody that extreme sports, all extreme activities, are dangerous and for people to take extreme care with doing those things and the public place is not the best place for that."

Police said the woman's next of kin was yet to be notified.

Street luge is an extreme sport in which competitors lie on a thin fibreglass or plastic board similar to a sled and race down a paved course.
