Turkish court charges Sarah, Duchess of York over orphanage film

TURKISH authorities want to lock Britain’s Duchess of York in a dungeon for filming children in one of their orphanages.

Privacy violation charges were filed Thursday against Sarah Ferguson that could slam her with a maximum of 221/2 years in prison if convicted.

The ex-wife of Britain’s Prince Andrew was charged in absentia of secretly filming children tied to their beds and left unattended in their cribs at an orphanage in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

Ferguson and her daughters made the gotcha film in 2008 as part of a British ITV network documentary on the plight of orphans in Turkey.

The court on Thursday accused Ferguson in absentia of going "against the law in acquiring footage and violating privacy" of five children. She faces a maximum term of 22 1/2 years in prison if convicted. No trial date has been set.

Ferguson, the former wife of Britain's Prince Andrew, made an undercover trip to Turkey in 2008 to examine orphanages for a British television program. Secretly filmed images that were broadcast appeared to show children tied to their beds or left in cribs at an orphanage near the capital of Ankara.
It is not clear why it took more than three years to file charges against Ferguson.
